PTFE
Magnets
Polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) was introduced as a commercial product in 1946 and is
generally known to the public by DuPont's brand name Teflon®.
PTFE is very non-reactive and is said to be able to work up to
327 °C before it starts to melt but its properties degrade
above 260 °C.
As it is so
non-reactive it is very useful as a coating for magnets that
are subject to harsh environments or laboratory
conditions. PTFE is resistant to most acids.
Typically,
magnets that are PTFE coated are Alnico or Samarium Cobalt,
although any magnetic material can be coated.
